Ways to Build Custom Furniture

Skill Requirements for Building Furniture
Every person is unique, and loves to have their own impression on the things they own. That is the reason more and more people are attempting to build their very own furniture instead of settling for store displayed furniture, which might probably have a thousand cheap cousins all over the country. If you had woodworking classes when you were a student, then building an entire piece of furniture from scratch, will be an easy task for you.
Basic furniture skills like taking precise measurements, working with saws and levelers, nailing boards, fixing laminates, etc. are a must-know, and it is a great help, if you know how to do some decorative work on your own. Having said that, if you are designing utilitarian furniture for your home, then you need only some basic skills. You can learn how to make furniture, by honing your basic carpentry skills.

How to Build Wood Furniture Yourself

Woodworking is not as difficult as it sounds. There are short-term classes where people are taught vital techniques involved in carpentry and even given some hands-on experience. Joining such a class could be a good start to making your own handmade furniture. Here you can learn how to build furniture, like stools, coffee-tables, center tables, cabinets, etc. Cabinetry is an entirely different art of its own, so you might get special tips on how to make cabinets.

It is not just wood that you can work with. A lot of homemade furniture today uses plastic, acrylic, and other such synthetic materials. Working with plastic is easy, but you will not get the same kind of finesse that you get with wood. One advantage of learning how to build custom furniture with plastic is that there is no hammering and nailing involved. Most plastic attachments are done by gluing pieces to one another. So, it is very safe for beginners. Wrought iron furniture is also much in demand, but because of the immense metal molding it requires, this furniture cannot be made at home.

Building Custom Furniture

People learning how to build custom furniture will have to start by making a sketch of the piece they want to make. This is one of the most important steps, because it will determine how your furniture will actually fit in your home. This is where perspective comes into the picture, because you will have to take some detailed and careful measurements, where each centimeter is important. It is not a bad idea at all if you spend a whole day in just preparing a sketch and measuring for the piece of furniture you are going to build.

Once the sketch is made, you will need to go shopping and get all the things you need. You must invest in a good carpenter’s toolbox that you are comfortable with, and get all the boards, laminates, adhesives and other accessories like hinges, nuts and bolts, fasteners, knobs, etc. With the skills you know, get down to work. If you stick to the sketch you have made and make precision an important part of your work, you will get a good frame. You can always decorate your work later on.

Today, with the surfeit of modular furniture available in stores, learning how to build furnishings has become much simpler. These modular items are designed in separate units that you can mix and match in whatever way you want. For instance, if you were to buy a modular wardrobe unit from a store, then you will be shipped an assortment of boards, shelves, doors and even small cabinet units, depending on the manufacturer. Most of them will also give you all the screws, hinges and other fittings that you require. Now, you can lay out these units and play around with them. You can arrange the components in a hundred different ways and build the wardrobe that best suits your tastes and requirements.

Almost everything from single unit computer tables to entire storage sheds are being shipped in modular formats. They also come with manuals that suggest different ways in which these units can be assembled. Building modular furniture is a very easy, and it even helps in getting the creative satisfaction of having built your furniture on your own.
As you can see, you too can make customized furniture on your own. However, it is also true that, making furniture at home is not every person’s cup of tea. If you have a hidden carpentry talent, then you can learn how to build custom furniture by joining a short-term carpentry class. Have patience, as you will take some time before you build furniture like a pro. Once you get enough experience, building furniture will be a piece of cake!

Tips to Make Your Guests Feel at Home

Most of us have a spare room in our homes, which gets converted into guest rooms upon impromptu arrivals. However, a guest room cannot just be a guest room. Just as you feel welcomed when you enter a hotel room, your guest needs to feel the same too. Little things that add to the convenience and comfort make the guest feel cared for and looked after. Making your guests feel at home requires some thought and planning. Although it isn’t much of an effort, you need to keep in mind certain details to make their stay as comfortable as possible. Here are a few things that will make the guest room as comforting as your home.

How to Prepare a Guest Bedroom

Clean Linen
Bed sheets and clean curtains are the first things that we notice when we enter any guest room. A clean set of linen makes a good impression on the guest. It speaks volumes about the simple sense of hygiene and cleanliness. Additionally, it makes the room look good too. Use light-colored sheets as light colors make the space look bigger than it actually is.

Fresh Toiletries
Using someone else’s soap or a shaving kit is a big turn off. If you don’t do it, do not expect your guests to do it either. Buy a fresh set of toiletries for the guest bathroom. This includes shampoo, conditioner, scrubs (as disposing a loofah would be expensive), toothbrushes, soaps and shower gels. See that the bathroom is washed, sanitized and free of odor. You can keep a few fresh flowers too, to make the bathroom smell nice.

Well-Made Bed
A crisp bed with soft bed covers and a warm blanket will give your guests a much-needed good night’s sleep. After a long journey, a well-made bed seems like the perfect way to make your guests feel at home. A comfortable bed is especially a great savior for overnight guests on a break journey.

Functioning Fixtures
If you have a heater, AC, fans, TV or any kind of fixtures in the guest room, make sure that they are functioning properly. A non-functioning AC on a warm night can be very irritating. Similarly, all other electric gadgets need to be in order before your guests arrive. Adequate lighting is another important aspect one needs to keep in mind while making a guest room. Besides the wall lighting, keep a nightstand to help out a nocturnal guest.

Laundered Towels
Nobody likes to use wet or stained towels. Providing your guests with laundered towels is a crucial part of making them comfortable. Getting soft, washed and fragrant towels are not difficult to find. Hand them over to the nearby laundry and you shall have them delivered to your home before your guests ring the bell.

Pair of Slippers
It gets uncomfortable to walk on floors that are extremely cold or dusty. Also, wearing slippers keeps the feet clean and prevents any kind of foot infection. Take care of this aspect, by providing your guests with a pair of slippers.

Dustbin
Most people forget to place dustbins in guest rooms. Many a time, this accessory is overlooked too. However, a dustbin in the guest room is very important as it keeps the room clean and saves your guest’s efforts to look for a dustbin all around the house to dispose the waste.

Something Special
Besides the aforementioned, walk an extra mile to make something special for the guests. If you know your guests well, then cooking their favorite meal, making their room in their favorite color, planning a nice dessert treat or catching up on movies that you’ve wanted to see together will truly make your guests feel at home. Small gestures that touch the nerve indicate your love and courtesy towards your guests. A good room is what any hotel can provide, but a personal touch can only be felt at home!

  • Stocked Up Bar
Adult guests would surely enjoy a round of drinks after a long day of travel. Ask your guests in advance about their favorite brands and stock up the bar in the room. Relaxing with a drink is a classic way to call it a day!
  • House Tour
Take your guests around your house and show them the way you’ve done it up. Showing them the place that means the world to you, will surely make them feel important.
  • Bookworms
Some people cannot fall asleep without a book. Pile up interesting novels, magazines and journals for these veracious readers. You could even ask them which book they would like to read, to make it even more special.

Making your guests feel at home is no big challenge. While making the guest room as comfortable as possible, think of the things you would yourself need while staying outside your house. Answer each question with honesty and you’ll have the perfect room for your guests!

Ways to Install Hinges

Hinges are normally installed on doors, boxes, and kitchen cabinets to facilitate movement. The various types available can also help you determine the extent to which you want the door to open. Beautiful and innovative styles of hinges can also enhance your home decor to a great extent. Installing them is not a very complex procedure and can be easily done on your own.

Installing Door Hinges

Step 1
Before you start installing hinges on your door, you must decide which way your door will open, to determine their placement. Some of them work both ways as they are reversible, while some of them will have specific left or right markings on them.

Step 2
Normally hinges are installed at 5 inches from above the door frame and 10 inches from below it. You will need to mark these positions on the door frame where you will be installing them. Remove already present hinges in case you are replacing them.

Step 3
Place the hinge on its position and trace it’s outline on the door frame. Use a pencil or an erasable marker for this. Ensure that you trace the exact height and width of the hinge. As you will be attaching it to the door frame with screws, mark those places as well.

Step 4
Pick up a chisel and hammer to jab the marked outline area on the door frame. This will form a depression for you to install the hinge. Remove any wood splinters in this area to clear it for the hinge to fit in.

Step 5
Take the hinge, and with help of screws, fix it at its determined place. If it is done properly, you will notice that the hinge is level with the door frame and is fixed firmly in its position. Attach the other half in its position(following steps 2, 3 and 4), all the while referring your instruction manual, in case there are any particular directions you need to follow. Use a hinge pin to connect the two halves.

Installing Hinges on a Box

Step 1
Hold the wood box and lid in such a way that you can easily access all points in the box and lid. Keep the lid on the box in the way it would appear when the box is closed.

Step 2
Take your hinges and keep them on the box like you would want them to be installed. Their position should, ideally, be 4 inches from ends of the lid. Bear in mind, the top leaf of the hinge should be straight in line with the top of the lid. Make markings for screws with pencil through the top leaf holes on hinges.

Step 3
Keep the hinges aside and with the help of a drilling machine, drill holes at the screw markings you just made. The holes should not be bigger in diameter than the screws you are going to fit through them. Put the hinges back in position, insert screws through the holes, and tighten them with a screwdriver.

Step 4
For the bottom leaf of the hinge, make hole markings with a pencil. Remove the hinges, drill holes, fix the hinges, and tighten them with screws. You have successfully installed hinges on a box.

You should be able to perform the task, at the most, in an hour. However, if you want to install hinges which are a little more complex in structure, call for a carpenter to help you out.

When you’re doing a total redecoration, the common modus operandi is to find a large thing you love―whether it’s a paint color, rug, couch, or whatever, and base the rest of the room around that. This time, you’re going to start small. You’re going to situate the tchotchkes and little things first, then go back and change the big stuff later if you have to. You probably won’t have to, but you may find yourself so inspired by your changes that you decide to go the whole hog. Whatever. This is about instant redecorating; we are not responsible for the sudden urge to rip up the carpet and install tray ceilings.
Start Small
Try rearranging the furniture that’s already there. Remove a piece or two if the room feels crowded. It’s amazing how different a room can feel when the sofa is moved from the west wall to the north wall. Switch your wall art around, too. If you have picture frames on every available horizontal surface, hang ’em up! Either scatter them in odd places or try a large grouping as a focal point. It’s okay if the frames don’t match; that’s totally a thing! Put away the throw blankets and maybe even remove a pillow or three from the couch. Take a step back and evaluate.
Shop the House
If you’re still not satisfied, take a walk through the house and gather up bits and pieces of other rooms. There’s no law that says that the green lamp in the bedroom must stay in the bedroom. Try it in the living room! Or that crystal bud vase you got as a wedding present that you never use; it would really class up the bathroom as a toothbrush holder. The idea is to look at the things you already own in a new way. Try to step outside the realm of every day, and look at your belongings as if you were at an estate sale. You may find yourself appreciating a new beauty in the most mundane things you haven’t even noticed in years.
Adjust the Lights
Lighting has a huge impact on the feel of a room. Put a lamp on a dimmer for a cozier feel, or switch to Reveal bulbs in a higher wattage to brighten up a room. The rule is to have three light sources: ambient, focal, and task. If the only lamp in the room is a torchiere, it’s probably pretty dim. Grab a small lamp from the home office, and put it on the opposite side of the room. On the other hand, there’s no reason to have megawatt lighting in the bedroom; a couple of wall sconces is all you need to set the mood for sleepy time or romance. If you do your makeup in the bedroom, keep a stick-on light in the drawer with your makeup, except don’t stick it; just pull it out when you need to be able to see.
See? Your whole house looks different now, doesn’t it? You may have even discovered that the “art deco” from the dining room looks really great in the bedroom, and the French Provincial from the kitchen should really be transplanted to the guest bathroom. So, maybe a project has begun after all. But at least now you’re inspired by your home, rather than bored with it.
